Payroll teams: The UK’s hidden key workers

This week at Merit, we’re celebrating National Payroll Week 2020, and there’s never been a more important time to thank the hard working payroll teams across the UK.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made it a challenging year for all industries, so it’s been really important to make sure that the hard working payroll teams get the thanks and recognition they deserve.

From healthcare workers to delivery drivers, and teachers to supermarket staff, it’s been really important to recognise the contributions that these key workers have made to our economy during the lockdown period.

In the recruitment industry, there was an understanding that payroll workers were a hidden group of key workers, making sure that everybody had income they required during this difficult time.

At Merit, we’ve been helping people with their payroll software for over 20 years, and it was never clearer to us than when the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme came in at very short notice just how important payroll teams were.

We worked around the clock to get the CJRS module into our system and we had it deployed within 48 hours. We knew how important it was to our customers to get this in just in time to pay their workers.

So with an unprecedented number of workers on furlough payroll teams of our customers were working day and night to make sure those workers received their payments. Many of those payroll teams themselves were working from home.

We work with a number of customers who work with healthcare provider,s and prior to the pandemic we saw about 2 million workers paid through our system every week. During the pandemic, we saw around 200,000 extra healthcare workers start to be paid through our systems, and it was really gratifying for us to see and help our customers with this new workforce’s needs.

We’ve also seen our customers have to adapt very quickly to a changing workplace. They’ve adopted things like our Online Portal which allows your workers to submit timesheets completely contactlessly to you. We’ve also seen more interest in our online expenses app, which allows people to submit expense claims without having to send a physical receipt through.

So as a thank you during National Payroll Week we’d like to offer the first 50 companies to contact us six months of Merit Expenses – completely free!

To take advantage of this offer, simply contact us through our website or drop us an email.
